What to expect from a Zumba class
Remember the first day of school? It can be a bit scary and overwhelming meeting new kids and a new teacher. The first day of any class can be scary, knowing what to expect can make it a little easier and less intimidating.
I had the opportunity to chat with a Zumba devotee and instructor in training to get an inside look at what one can expect in their a Zumba class.
When Jen started Zumba she was in her own words, the chubby girl. She was very out of shape and due to an injury several years prior experienced chronic pain. She went to a Zumba class to get herself out of a sour mood. She ended up doing much more for herself that she had intended. “The music moved me to my soul” she gushed when asked about how she felt about her first class. “I was the big girl in the class huffing and puffing dripping sweat, but I was having a great time,” Jen continued raving.
Zumba was the catalyst for Jen to change a wide variety of things about her lifestyle. She credits Zumba with inspiring her to change her eating habits and opt for whole nutritious foods instead of convenience foods that she had previously preferred.
Soon Jen went from attending one class a week to attending class three times a week and the results were astounding. In nine months Jen shed more than 70 lbs and was not experiencing as much pain as she previously had been. Now she feels healthy whole and happy, “I feel a hundred times better now. I can be a role model for my children. I actually have energy to play with them now. I never thought I would say this, ever, but now I crave fruits not junk. If I did not experience it, there is no way I would believe it.”
Most classes are formatted with fast and slow songs, as well as using whole songs for toning moves. This allows the class to function like and interval training. The instructor will typically dance in front of the class and lead the movements. In larger classes there is often an assistant or two help students catch on if needed. They also are another person to watch in front of the class.
A typical Zumba class playlist will consist of about 70% Latin music and 30% Hip Hop, Bollywood etc. This allows the dances to change constantly and keep your muscles challenged leading to quick results. It is a great way to head off the holiday over-indulgences.
Zumba classes are all over, one of the easiest ways to find one in your area is check out our Online directory of local Zumba classes, courses, lessons & trainings in Houston.
As the Zumba tagline says “Ditch the workout and join the party”. This class is so fun it makes it easy to forget that you are burning hundreds of calories. Jen used Zumba to jump start life changes that have benefited her physical health as well as her mental well-being. So “ditch the work out and join the party!”
